Darien Plant Survives Tornado

Neighbors Not So Fortunate

The Darien plant fell victim to the tornado that damaged the McIntosh Industrial park on Mother's Day Sunday. Though the damage was relatively minor comparatively speaking, the plant was down for almost three weeks. Both aggregate conveyors were damaged and  the batch house was shifted off it's foundation. Plans had already been made to do away with the batch house and this incident just brought those plans to fruition! Less than one hundred yards away, the devastation was absolute as the Gateway Rehabilitation Center, a McIntosh County Fire Station and a boat dealership. Here are some photos:

ABOVE LEFT: Standing in front of Darien plant looking across at the side of the Darien Telephone Communications building. Notice the 3 satellite dishes - there used to be 12. ABOVE RIGHT: The front side of the Darien Telephone building. The object on the right side of the picture is an overturned semi van trailer from Smith and Sons Seafood next door and yes, that is a boat in the driveway from the boat dealership across the road. BELOW LEFT: A McIntosh County Fire and EMS Station is destroyed. The fire truck you see is inside the building. BELOW RIGHT: The Gateway Rehab Center was totally obliterated. It was occupied at the time of the tornado strike - but there were only fairly minor injuries and no deaths.

ABOVE LEFT: Plant damage included one overturned and one leaning aggregate loading conveyor. ABOVE RIGHT: Additionally, the Batch House was lifted off it's foundation and turned. BELOW LEFT: An approximately 10000 square foot metal building housing a boat dealer used to occupy this spot. The slab, which is to the right of the overturned white boat, is nearly clean. BELOW RIGHT: Across the highway from the Industrial Park, the tree line shows path where the tornado descended to ground level.

MCI's Quality Assurance Gets Technical Boost

Quality Assurance gained some serious technical knowledge this week. While projects like Yankee Stadium and the Freedom Tower in New York aren't on the horizon for Mobile Concrete's market area, Quality Assurance Manager Ollie McGahee has just returned from a Euclid Chemical Technical Seminar in Cleveland, Ohio, that analyzed these projects (and many others), as well as an array of topics on the latest innovations in ready mix concrete industry and Euclid's capabilities to assist and support it's customers in a variety of ways. With state of the art laboratory facilities and top-notch personnel, Euclid is a leader in development of high performance concrete in virtually any application. Mobile Concrete is appreciative of Euclid's dedication and commitment to it's customers (even us smaller ones) to help us remain capable of competing on even the most technologically challenging of projects.  Be sure to check out the website link in the sidebar on the left for more information about Euclid Chemicals.

Prices to Increase January 1

As the cost of materials continues to increase, so does the price of concrete. After lengthy analysis of our costs, Owner and President Albert Dyal announced today that Mobile Concrete, Inc. will be raising our prices 6% across the board effective January 1, 2008. This is slightly below the average market increases of 8 - 10%. As we are attempting to minimize the price increase as much as possible, we will be unable to offer any price protection unless previously contracted.

The Jesup Plant and Home Office will be moving in the coming weeks. Mobile Concrete, Inc. has acquired property and a steel building on South US Hwy 341 (Brunswick Hwy). The building was formerly occupied by Southland Waste. It is hopeful the move will be completed by January 1 and that we will be able to start the new year in the new facility. Check back here for progress.

Move Behind Schedule

Owing to delays beyond control, we won't be able to complete our move by the first of the year. Owner and President Albert Dyal is still hopeful for completion of the move by mid-January. Please note that our mailing address (P.O. Box 1254, Jesup, GA 31598) and phone numbers will not change.

Slowly But Surely

Ground is being gained on the construction of the new Jesup Plant. The silo is in place and the shop and front office have begun moving. Owner and President Albert Dyal hopes to have things in place enough to start some test runs the week of January 21st and have the move completed and everything on-line by the last week of January. Pictures of the new facility are on the Jesup Division page.

Mobile Concrete Drivers Complete Highway Watch® Certification

One hundred percent of Mobile Concrete drivers have completed the national Highway Watch® training program. Highway Watch®, a program of the Department of Homeland Security, is the roadway sector's national safety and security program that utilizes the skills, experiences, and "road smarts" of America's transportation workers to help protect the nation's critical infrastructure and the transportation of goods, services, and people. The course teaches drivers  to recognize potential safety and security threats and avoid becoming a target of terrorists. The Highway Watch® effort seeks to prevent terrorists from using large vehicles or hazardous cargoes as weapons. The training provides drivers with the observational tools and the opportunity to exercise their expert understanding of the transportation environment to report safety and security concerns rapidly and accurately to the authorities. In addition to matters of homeland security - stranded vehicles or accidents, unsafe road conditions, and other safety related situations are reported eliciting the appropriate emergency responders. Highway Watch® reports are combined with other information sources and shared both with federal agencies and the roadway transportation sector.

The Highway Watch® program is administered by the American Trucking Association under a cooperative agreement with the Department of Homeland Security. In Georgia, information and resources are available through the Georgia Motor Trucking Association.
